M&M's The Lost Formulas[edit]

M&M's The Lost Formulas is the first M&M's-basedvideo game and was released on September 28, 2000 for both Macintosh and Microsoft Windows. It was published by Simon & Schuster Interactive in North America and JoWooD Productions in Europe and developed by Boston Animation. It is a Crash Bandicoot, Super Magnetic Neo & Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers style game, and also is optionally a game which teaches math.[1]

Gameplay[edit]

Yellow is the only playable character. There are three zones on each level, the start zone, math zone, and the end zone. There is an additional bonus zone at the end of both the start and end zones if all three pieces of the secret formula are collected, with level 1 and the end zone to level 8 being the only exceptions. Math zones are similarly themed to the start/end zones but require the player to solve a simple math problem. The answer is selected via either jumping to a numbered platform, or driving through a numbered box. The difficulty of the problems slightly increases as the levels grow higher, but can also be set in the menu. The game has a total of 8 levels.

M&M's Minis Madness[edit]

M&M's Minis Madness is a game for the Game Boy Color released in late 2000 for American markets. It is a platform game where the player controls 4 different M&M's characters who each have a specific ability which can be used to solve puzzles. The characters can be switched at any time by the player.

It was rated 6 out of 10 by Nintendo Power. IGN rated it 4 out of 10, describing it as 'barely competent' and too easy.[2]

M&M's Shell Shocked[edit]

European PlayStation cover art.

M&M's Shell Shocked was released on September 30, 2001 for American markets by Simon & Schuster Interactive. A platform game largely in the vein of Crash Bandicoot, players control Yellow in an effort to escape from their miniature counterparts (M&M minis), however Red and Green also make an appearance. On July 20, 2002 the game was released in Europe by JoWooD Productions. This game is very similar to M&M's The Lost Formulas except there is not a Math Zone, the name was changed, power ups were added, and the levels were either shortend or slightly altered. In order to make up for the lost Math Zones, boss battles were included as the final zone of each level. Fans of the M&M series were delighted when it was announced Billy West would be providing the voice of Red, he was quoted as saying 'I am so proud of providing the voice of such an iconic character, I phoned Micheal up as soon as I got the news and he was obviously delighted.'[citation needed]

M&M's Kart Racing[edit]

M&M's Kart Racing was critically panned upon release. It has a GameRankings score of 22.50% and 22.33% for the Wii and DS versions respectively.

IGN gave the DS version 3/10 and the Wii version 2.5/10 citing that 'commercial mascots make terrible videogames' and that the game 'barely uses the license at all'.GameSpot gave the DS version 2/10 stating that the game 'could put you off M&M's for life'. GameSpot also awarded the game 'Flat-out Worst Game' award in GameSpot's 'Best and Worst of 2008' awards. GameZone also panned it, giving it 2/10. The game was also awarded the lowest-rated kart game by Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2011, stating that the game's nearest 'rival' was Shrek Swamp Kart Speedway, the latter of which has a GameRankings score of 26.40%, 3.9% more than M&M's Kart Racing.

M&M's: The Lost Formulas is an engaging game where players take on the role of Yellow, the peanut M&M. Your job is to track down the lost formulas that the M&M's Minis have stolen and hidden in the factory. Finding the hidden pieces of the formula requires breaking boxes of M&M and Mars products as well as exploring the seven factory levels.

Each of the eight levels, including one on the road to the factory, is split into three parts, with start, math, and end zones. Zones are filled with obstacles, and in the math zone solving problems incorrectly can cost a life. An extra life is awarded for every 100 Minis collected. Minis are found in boxes labeled with various M&M and Mars products and are earned by driving a car through the box or by 'going berserk' on the boxes.

Although controls are fairly simple, they still take a bit of skill to master, since, at times, they have to be used with precision in order to avoid danger. This can cause younger players to possibly experience frustration when maneuvering in certain areas. Most of the math problems are simple, targeted at the first or second grade level, and both the type and difficulty level can be set before any individual game. Older children may have better skill at manipulating Yellow, but be less challenged by the problems.

The levels are well designed, and the four hidden levels, achieved when players find all three pieces of a hidden formula, can be very fun to play. The levels have wonderful visuals, from dripping, flowing milk chocolate and sprays of candy colors to a huge warehouse level and surfing through factory water pipes. Gameplay is captivating and provides the player with hours of enjoyment long after he or she has mastered the math problems.

Despite the drawbacks of the controls, which can be difficult for younger players to master, and the somewhat blocky and pixilated nature of the movie cut scenes, there are enough interesting visuals and fun gameplay to keep kids coming back time and again to play.

Graphics: Most of the graphics are very good. On some machines, however, the graphics for the movie appear blocky and pixilated. Even with an accelerated graphics card, the movies have a distracting series of bright and dark lines that can take away from the action onscreen.

Sound: Each level has a different soundtrack, but all are exciting and support the feeling of the on-screen action. Unique sounds accompany the Minis as they flee from the broken boxes, as does gaining a new life.

Enjoyment: Kids will really enjoy the game, despite the occasional control problems, due to the exciting levels and well-done graphics.
